Op zondag 19 februari werden in het Prince Of Wales Theatre in Londen de jaarlijkse Whatsonstage Awards 2012 uitgereikt. Een overzicht van de genomineerden en winnaars.
Dit jaar werd de publieksprijs in het leven geroepen door de populaire theater website Whatsonstage voor de twaalfde keer uitgereikt. Het zijn de enige theater prijzen in Engeland die volledig zijn gekozen door het publiek.
In tegenstelling tot de Olivier Awards komen alle producties in aanmerking die zowel op West End als off-West End in de periode van 1 december 2010 tot en met 30 november 2011 in première zijn gegaan.
In november hebben in de nominatieronde ruim 12.000 bezoekers in 26 categorieën een stem uitgebracht op hun favoriete producties en performances. In de stemronde in de maanden december en januari hebben ruim 70.000 individuele liefhebbers de stem uitgebracht die heeft geleid tot de uiteindelijke nominaties.
Grote kanshebbers in de categorie musical waren 'Ghost The Musical' en 'Matilda' die beiden maar liefst negen nominaties in de wacht sleepten. 'Crazy For You' en 'Betty Blue Eyes' bleken ook populair met zes nominaties en 'Rock Of Ages' en 'Shrek The Musical' kregen vijf nominaties. Andrew Lloyd Webber's productie van 'The Wizard Of Oz' moest het doen met vier nominaties.
Grote winnaar bij de musicals was 'Matilda' die vier prijzen won waaronder die voor Best New Musical, op de voet gevolgd door 'Ghost' die uiteindelijk drie awards won. 'Shrek' en 'The Wizard Of Oz' kregen elk twee awards waarbij 'The Wizard Of Oz' die voor Best Musical Revival won.
Populair in de categorie toneel met ieder vijf nominaties zijn de revival van 'Anna Christie' in het Donmar Warehouse met Ruth Wilson en Jude Law en de NT productie van 'One Man Two Guvnors'. Na het National Theatre en het Adelphi is 'One Man Two Guvnors' binnenkort te zien in Theatre Royal Haymarket met onder andere Jodie Prenger ('Oliver!' en 'Spamalot') als nieuwkomer in de cast.
Grote winnaar van de toneelprijzen was 'One Man Two Guvnors' met drie awards. 'Anna Christie' stond uiteindelijk met lege handen en wist geen van de nominaties te verzilveren.

Zo zie je maar hoe smaken verschillen - ik vond dit echt de meest waardeloze awardshow ever. Ik begrijp dat je geen optredens op de livestream mag laten zien i.v.m. de rechten van de shows, dus daar kan ik niet over oordelen, maar de presentatie/manier waarop de awards werden uitgereikt, lieten mijn oordeel over Carlo&Irene;'s versie van het MA-min-G flink stijgen.
Serieus, dit was beneden alles dat ik ooit zag...................
PS, yay for Hannah, jammer dat Danielle niet won en HULDE aan de gedelete tweet van Noel Sullivan, West Ends fresh new Galileo, over de winst van Amanda Holden! Noel ROCKS!!!
