Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein is set to open in the West End next autumn.

Based on the Oscar nominated 1974 film, which starred Gene Wilder, the story sees esteemed brain surgeon and professor Frederick Frankenstein inherit his grandfather’s castle in Transylvania. He must decide whether to continue to run from his family’s tortured past or continue his grandfather’s experiments in Transylvania.

Brooks will team up with co-writer Thomas Meehan and choreographer Susan Stroman when the musical opens at the Newcastle Theatre Royal on 26 August. It will close on 9 September before moving into the West End.

Young Frankenstein will be produced by Brooks, Michael Harrison, Fiery Angel and Hani Farsi.

Casting and dates are to be announced soon.

De musical is in Londen te zien in het Garrick Theatre. Previews starten op 28 september, de première is op 10 oktober. De kaartverkoop is inmiddels begonnen.

Opmerkelijke keuze, 10 jaar geleden speelde het een jaar op Broadway in een theater met bijna 3x zoveel zitplaatsen. Ook het toneel van het Garrick theatre is niet echt groot. Het Broadway decor zal dus niet passen.Hopelijk hebben ze in de afgelopen jaren flink aan de musical gesleuteld en wordt het in een kleinere setting misschien dan toch nog een succes.

De cast is inmiddels bekend gemaakt ...

Dr Frankenstein will be played by Hadley Fraser who made made his West End debut as Marius in Les Misérables in 2002. His other theatre credits include Coriolanus, City of Angels and The Vote (Donmar Warehouse).

Comedian Ross Noble will play Igor. Noble is best known for his stand-up comedy and appearances on panel shows such as QI and Have I Got News For You. He has worked with Brooks in the past, appearing in the 2015 touring production of The Producers with Jason Manford.

The cast also includes Lesley Joseph (Frau Blucher), Dianne Pilkington, Summer Strallen and Patrick Clancy.

Joining them will be Imogen Brooke, Matt Crandon, Nathan Elwick, Kelly Ewins-Prouse, Andrew Gordon-Watkins, Sammy Kelly, Richard Pitt, Harriet Samuel-Gray, Gemma Scholes, Emily Squibb, Aron Wild and Josh Wilmott.

With a book by Brooks and Thomas Meehan, with music and lyrics by Brooks, the story is about Frederick Frankenstein who inherits his grandfather’s castle in Transylvania. Gene Wilder played the title role in the 1974 film.

The production will open at Newcastle Theatre Royal on 26 August before opening in London in September.
