The first major West End production of Chess since 1986 is to star Michael Ball (Mack and Mabel, Sweeney Todd, Hairspray) as Anatoly, Alexandra Burke (The Bodyguard, Sister Act) as Svetlana, original cast member Murray Head (Chess, Jesus Christ Superstar) as the Arbitar, Tim Howar (Mike and the Mechanics, Rock of Ages) as Freddie, and Cassidy Janson (Beautiful, Avenue Q) as Florence. This epic musical love story opens at the London Coliseum Thursday 26 April 2018 for a strictly limited 5 week season.

The musical, written in 1984 by ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, The Lion King, Evita), tells a story of love and political intrigue, set against the background of the Cold War in the late 1970s/early 1980s, in which superpowers attempt to manipulate an international chess championship for political ends.

Two of the world’s greatest chess masters, one American, one Russian, are in danger of becoming the pawns of their governments as their battle for the world title gets under way. Simultaneously their lives are thrown into further confusion by a Hungarian refugee, a remarkable woman who becomes the centre of their emotional triangle. This mirrors the heightened passions of the political struggles that threaten to destroy lives and loves. Includes the international hit singles ‘I Know Him So Well’ and ‘One Night In Bangkok’. Other well-known songs from the score include ‘Anthem’, ‘Someone Else’s Story’, ‘Heaven Help my Heart’ and ‘Pity The Child’.

Featuring English National Opera’s award-winning Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by John Rigby with choreography by Stephen Mear. This new West End production will be directed by Laurence Connor, whose recent credits include School of Rock and Miss Saigon on Broadway and in the West End, Les Misérables on Broadway, and the international Jesus Christ Superstar arena tour. This is the fourth production by Michael Linnit and Michael Grade in collaboration with ENO.

Murray Head heeft zich om persoonlijke redenen terug getrokken uit ‘Chess’

“The producers of Chess announce with great regret that Murray Head is to leave the cast due to personal reasons. Cedric Neal will replace Murray in the production. Cedric was most recently in the West End when he starred as Berry Gordy in Motown the Musical and will now return to the UK to play The Arbiter in the forthcoming production at the London Coliseum.”

Wow wat was dit een fantastische avond in het London Coliseum ! Semi-staged is absoluut een understatement. Ik vond het in alle opzichten een volwaardige musical met een grandioos klinkend orkest. Heb serieus overwogen om er een andere voorstelling te laten schieten en er een tweede keer heen te gaan.

Ik kon het niet laten om een voorstelling te laten schieten vanavond.
Maandag jl. zat ik op de eerste rij stalles en vanavond vooraan Dress Circle voor slechts £ 25,00.
Super aardige gozer trouwens aan de kassa.

Ik vond het goed maar dat is dan ook alles.
Orkest was soms niet te horen en op andere momenten overstemde het de zangers.

Alexandra Burke - had ik veel meer van verwacht.

I know him so well vond ik echt een enorme tegenvaller.
Verder vond ik het allemaal echt wel goed en zat het mooi in elkaar, maar toch een beetje teleurgesteld.

Gisteravond intens genoten, vanaf front row, van een in mijn beleving indrukwekkende Chess. Prima cast met voor mij als uitschieters Michael Ball, Tim Howard, Philipp Browne en Cassidy Janson. Ijzersterk, groot ensemble. Leuk om Jordan Lee Davies in een vrij prominente rol in het ensemble te zien. Semi-staged? Qua decor/props, kostuums, spel etc is het inderdaad ‘gewoon’ een volwaardige musical. Visueel ziet het er door de vele beelden (politiek/historisch, soms vermengd met beelden van de acteurs) en belichting prachtig uit.  Tenslotte, daar is ie weer, een groots spelend orkest. Fijne avond theater!

Verder vond ik het allemaal echt wel goed en zat het mooi in elkaar, maar toch een beetje teleurgesteld.

Exact mijn gevoel! Ik vond het een prima productie, maar ik ben er ook niet zo dolenthousiast over zoals sommige anderen hier :p

Ik ben wel dolenthousiast, maar ik zal ook eerlijk toegeven dat CHESS al sinds de eerste voorstelling die ik op 15 mei 1986 zag mijn favoriete show is. Ik ken alle versies en dus ook het verhaal door en door. En juist het verhaal wordt vaak bekritiseerd. Niet altijd terecht denk ik. Tim Rice verteld heel veel in zijn teksten, maar je moet je er dus wel in verdiepen. Het vraagt wat van de kijker.

Ik heb dit jaar al twee fantastische producties gezien. De productie in Denemarken (londen script) en een sterrencast in Washington (nieuw script). Vooral het nieuwe script in Washington helpt de kijker beslist.
Ik heb de show in londen 4 keer gezien. En vooral de laatste voorstel die ik zag (26 mei) was vrij sensationeel met een uitblinkende cast. Wat de nieuwe Londense versie zo mooi maakt is dat het het stuk behandeld zoals het feitelijk behandeld hoort te worden: als een popopera. En bij opera geldt nu eenmaal dat het verhaal/teksten wat minder belangrijk zijn, het gaat vooral om de muziek. En in deze productie is de muziek/zang dik maar dan ook dik in orde. Over de regiekeuzes kun je van mening verschillen (Laurence O’conner is niet mijn favoriete regisseur), maar Chess is in deze versie ook een absoluut spektakel.

Ondertussen wordt het Washington script verder door ontwikkeld en zit een productie op Broadway er nog steeds in. Ook de Londense versie staat op de planning voor Broadway. Mooie tijden voor een Chess fan als ik.
