Deze nieuwe broadwayshow begint op 27 Maart zijn previews in het Booth Theatre met een premiere op 15 April.
Vorig jaar heeft het al een paar maanden off-Broadway gespeeld, maar nu komt hij dan ook echt op Broadway.

Het verhaal is:

Diana Goodman, a suburban housewife, struggles through life as she battles mental demons in the form of bipolar disorder coupled with hallucinations that stem from a trauma sixteen years earlier. Her husband Dan, an architect, fights to keep her mind and his family stable but that fight becomes increasingly problematic as Diana decides to stop taking the pills given to her by her doctor. After several failed attempts to stem the tide by means of talk therapy with a different doctor, she eventually falls into an even darker place and attempts suicide. At the suggestion of her new doctor, Diana is convinced by her husband to submit to electroconvulsive therapy that causes her to have short-term amnesia. Throughout her struggles, Diana’s relationship with her daughter Natalie becomes strained because Natalie feels invisible in the eyes of her mother, who prefers the superhero-like image she has created for her son

Door de clips en dit nummer ben ik toch wel erg enthousiast geworden over deze show!

Ik ook! Hoewel ik, toen ik eerst de verhaallijn hoorde, er een beetje twijfels bij had, ben ik inmiddels ook enthousiast! Ik heb er bijna niets dan goede verhalen over gehoord en hoop dat het goed draait op Broadway!

Haha, nee, die ‘ene’ foto heeft daar absoluut niks mee te maken. En dat Aaron in deze productie speelt heeft ook niks te maken met de reden waarom ik überhaupt in eerste instantie in deze show geinteresseerd raakte. :engel:  Okay, Who am I kidding?!

Maar op dit moment is Aaron niet meer het enige waarin ik geinteresseerd ben en lijkt de show mij gewoon ook erg mooi. In ieder geval een mooi verhaal 😉

No worries. Yolande & ik hebben besloten het maar op te geven om jou er van te overtuigen hoe geweldig Aaron is 😉

Ik ben mijn reis naar NY (lees: Broadway) aan het voorbereiden, maar ik zie nu pas deze musical er tussen staan… Is pas laat bekend geworden dat ze op Broadway terecht zouden komen nu The Story of My Life geflopt is? Weet iemand dat?

Ik weet het niet precies. Volgens mij waren de voorstellingen bij Arena Stage in ieder geval een succes en zou het naar Broadway komen. Eerst was Next to Normal gepland in het Longacre Theatre, alhoewel dat denk ik niet ideaal was, want op broadway.com staat:

“The news release announcing the Broadway engagement noted that “in order to maintain the necessary intimacy for this six-person musical, the second balcony of the Longacre Theatre will be closed for the entire run of Next to Normal, providing an intimate setting of 820 seats.”“

Nu The Story of My Life geflopt is gaat het naar the Booth Theatre, wat ‘beter past’.

Ik denk dat de show wel gepland stond om naar Broadway te komen… maar ik heb daar geen keihard bewijs voor.

Volgens playbill.com is de cd 7 april ‘digitaal’ beschikbaar en ligt ‘ie in de winkels vanaf 12 mei. Inclusief tracklist - ziet eruit als een ‘goede’ cd met zoveel nummers, haha!

This brave, breathtaking musical, which opened Wednesday night at the Booth Theater, focuses squarely on the pain that cripples the members of a suburban family, and never for a minute does it let you escape the anguish at the core of their lives. “Next to Normal” does not, in other words, qualify as your standard feel-good musical. Instead this portrait of a manic-depressive mother and the people she loves and damages is something much more: a feel-everything musical, which asks you, with operatic force, to discover the liberation in knowing where it hurts.

Yorkey’s lyrics still lack specificity, relying too often on platitudes frequently shared by several characters simultaneously with supposedly different meanings. The arbitrary use of false rhymes (dark/apart, did it/hit it) doesn’t help. Kitt’s varied score gives the show energy, but the employment of rock to dramatize anger becomes generalized and distancing. Particularly damaging is the show’s ending. Diana decides that her problem is not medical but “in her soul” – whatever that means – and though she still loves him, her marriage to Dan has been wrong from the start. She refuses further medical treatment and leaves husband and daughter to go home to Mom and Dad. Dan and Natalie experience gerrymandered psychological breakthroughs and everybody sings an unearned feel-good anthem about letting “light” into their lives. All I could think was, poor Mom and Dad.

Ik kan niet oordelen over de show in het geheel, maar de cast recording vind ik wél geweldig! 📣
