Vandaag 30 september is de voorverkoop voor ‘Gone With The Wind’ begonnen. Previews in het New London Theatre vanaf 5 april. De wereldpremiere is 22 april. Naast Trevor Nunn (regie)  tekenen bekende namen als John Napier (decor) en Andreane Neofitou (kostuums) voor de produktie. Erg benieuwd !

Ik ben ook erg benieuwd naar deze show. Alleen hoop ik dat de musical niet zo langdradig word als de film…...

Het is niet de eerste keer dat Gone with the wind als musical in Londen is uitgebracht. Ik ben eens in mijn archief gedoken en kwam een artikel tegen uit Elsevier van 3 juni 1972. In theatre Royal Drury Lane had net de premiére plaats gevonden van Gone with the wind, the musical. Muziek en tekst waren van Harold Rome, regie had Joe Layton.
Ondanks de overweldigende stage-set en effecten, met als hoogtepunt de brand van de stad Atlanta, heeft de productie het niet lang uitgehouden en geplande uitvoeringen in de rest van de wereld werden afgeblazen. Onder de titel Scarlett is ie een paar jaar later nog in een verkorte versie in Japan opgevoerd.

Ik mag hopen dat deze versie het langer vol zal houden. Vind Trevor Nunn een fantastische regisseur maar zijn Woman in White werd toch niet het succes dat men er van verwacht had (alhoewel ik het een van de mooiste nieuwe producties vind die ik de afgelopen jaren heb gezien). Ik ben erg benieuwd, ga zeker kijken!

Het creatieve team belooft veel goeds in ieder geval en ik vind het logo prachtig ontworpen ... Alleen die Margaret Martin is nogal een mysterie omdat ze nooit eerder een musical componeerde en nu verantwoordelijk is voor script, muziek en teksten. Daar hebben ze blijkbaar veel vertrouwen in want het lijkt me een enorme gok. Maar ik ga zeker kijken in mei.

Op Playbill staat een interview met regisseur Trevor Nunn wat gedeeltelijk ook over Gone With The Wind gaat ...

Playbill.com: And you’re going to be taking on a titanic project, a stage version of Gone With the Wind. How big will this production be?
TN: Curiously, a decision that we took a few months ago has had a huge effect on our preparation. We decided that it was kind of an impossibility to go on waiting year in and year out for one of those huge London theatres with 1,600 or 1,800 seats and a huge stage, because they have shows installed that are likely going to last for many years. So I got to thinking in a different way and made a proposal that we could set about the show in very much the same way I set about adapting Charles Dickens’s huge 1,000-page novel Nicholas Nickleby. And here we are adapting Margaret Mitchell’s 1,000-page novel. With Nickleby, we were able to do that using various techniques and encouraging the audience’s involvement. The Mitchell project is developing much in that direction.

Playbill.com: With audience involvement, you mean?
TN: Well, I’m not going to say more, but if you saw Nicholas Nickleby, you would know what I meant about how the performance at times included the audience, was amongst the audience, was around the audience, as well as was on the stage in front of them. We have secured the New London Theatre, which is where we first did Cats. The designer who completely transformed the New London Theatre for Cats is John Napier. So we’ve got the theatre we want for John to do something completely unexpected. But how do you adapt something that has an epic scale? We have no intention of competing with the film. We’re doing something that is theatrical.

Playbill.com: I imagine there will be a lot of attention surrounding the casting of the leads. But perhaps you’re not going to go the route of the film director George Cukor and tour the world looking for your Scarlett.
TN: (Laughs) I don’t intend to tour the world. My carbon footprint would become more deplorable than it is at the moment. The casting is crucial. The casting should be accurate and fulfill what an audience wants from it.

Playbill.com: Do you want American actors for the leads?
TN: It’s very much in debate at the moment. So watch this space.

Playbill.com: Well, they do say the Southern accent is the closest the U.S. has to the English accent.
TN: They do, don’t they!

Whatonstage meldt dat Jill Paice (onder andere The Woman In White en Curtains) inderdaad de rol van Scarlett O’Hara gaat vertolken in de musicalversie van ‘Gone With The Wind’

De Daily Mail meldt dat Darius Danesh is gecast als Rhett Butler in ‘Gone With The Wind’. Eerder circuleerden geruchten over Hugh Jackman of John Barrowman.
Danesh, ex-Pop Idol, stond eerder op de planken als Billy Flynn in ‘Chicago’ op West End en als Sky Masterson in de Michael Grandage revival van ‘Guys And Dolls’

is er ondertussen al meer bekend over deze show? Ik ga in de zomer weer naar Londen dus wil er misschien wel heen

Er is inderdaad behalve de info op de website nog niet veel bekend over de voorstelling maar ik ben wel erg benieuwd.

Gisteren zijn de repetities begonnen en zijn er wat foto’s verschenen van de hoofdrolspelers Jill Paice en Darius Danesh. De musical schijnt zich meer te baseren op de roman van Margaret Mitchell dan op de film.

Over het decor zegt Danesh ‘This is an ensemble piece and really is a break-through in terms of staging. In fact one of the most incredible stages you have ever seen in London or on Broadway is being constructed at the New London Theatre as we speak. In that sense I am not worried at all about finding depth in the role of Rhett. I’m just focussed on enjoying every minute and being very dedicated to the process of giving our best.’

The Stage meldt dat Turner Classic Movies op 20 april een ‘making of’ documentaire uit gaat zenden van ‘Gone With The Wind’ ...

Satellite television channel Turner Classic Movies is to screen a programme documenting the making of forthcoming West End musical Gone With the Wind.

Gone with the Wind - The Making of the Musical will see a TCM camera crew shadowing the cast and crew in their run-up to opening at the New London Theatre.

Directed by Trevor Nunn, the musical stars Darius Danesh as Rhett Butler and Jill Paice as Scarlett O’Hara. The documentary will be screened on April 20, just before the show’s opening night on April 22. A second version of the show, incorporating footage from the opening night, is also being planned for later in the year.

The move follows a similar deal between West End musical The Lord of the Rings and National Geographic last year, which documented behind the scenes of the production, prior to its opening at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
