Op de site van Andrew Lloyd Webber kwam ik het bericht tegen dat ‘The Beautiful Game’ in bewerkte vorm en onder de nieuwe titel ‘The Boys In The Photograph’ een nieuwe kans gaat krijgen. Ik ben erg benieuwd !
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton went to Liverpool last week to work with students of the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA). The pair, who co-wrote the West End musical The Beautiful Game, attended a workshop rehearsal for a new version of the show, which has been renamed The Boys in the Photograph.
The first workshop performance of The Boys in The Photograph will take place at LIPA in April.

En in een interview met de Houston Chronicle het volgende
Q: The Beautiful Game also has its admirers – but it just ran a year in London and never came to Broadway. Was the subject matter (soccer and religious war in Northern Ireland) deemed too “foreign” for the U.S.?
A: I consider it the most daring musical I’ve ever written. It’s really a show about religious war, not about soccer – about how children are corrupted and become terrorists. It could’ve been set in any country with ideological conflict. The day after the London production closed was 9/11 – and suddenly the show’s relevance was clear. It’s hard to get a musical with serious intention performed and accepted. But it’s going to be done again, in Toronto in 2008. And we’re changing the title to The Boys in the Photograph.
