Award-winning composer and producer Andrew Lloyd Webber is collaborating on a third reality casting program for the BBC. This time roles will be cast for a revival of the family-friendly musical Oliver!
Unlike previous productions for which the television format found stars - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and The Sound of Music - Lloyd Webber will have no producer’s stake in the revival of Lionel Bart’s Oliver!
During the television series “Any Dream Will Do,” which discovered Lee Mead for the role of Joseph, the BBC received complaints from some London producers for giving Lloyd Webber’s shows undue promotion.
The names of the producers were not revealed, but it appears the BBC has listened and deemed that Lloyd Webber may only be involved as judge for its latest casting show.
The rights for Oliver! are controlled by Cameron Mackintosh, who will produce the production.
The Daily Mail reports that the television show will cast contestants, who will compete for the roles of Nancy and the Artful Dodger, in the New Year. The BBC reality show will be broadcast in the spring. No date for the West End revival of Oliver! has been announced, but it will be based on Sam Mendes’ 1994 production.

Naast de oude bekenden Van Outen en Barrowman voegt Barry Humphries zich bij de jury voor de nieuwe reeks ‘I’d Do Anything’, vanaf volgende maand op de BBC ...

Denise Van Outen and John Barrowman are returning to their roles as judges alongside Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber as we search for our Nancy and Oliver hopefuls in I’d Do Anything.

Joining them on the judges podium will be actor, comedian, writer, satirist, painter and star of musical theatre Barry Humphries CBE.

Perhaps better known as the infamous Dame Edna Everage, Barry has had huge success in musical theatre, and has long been associated with the enduring appeal of Oliver!

Barry created the role of undertaker Mr Sowerberry in the original 1960 London stage production, and reprised this on Broadway in 1963.

He also starred as Fagin in the 1967 Piccadilly Theatre’s revival, and subsequently reprised the role in Cameron Mackintosh’s award-winning staging at the London Palladium.

It’s going to take a lot to impress this star line-up, so our Nancy and Oliver hopefuls had better pull out all of the stops!

Tune in on Saturday 15th March to begin the I’d Do Anything journey

The wait is almost over. On Saturday 15th March at 7.30pm you can settle down after some food, glorious food, and say Oom Pah Pah to Graham as we enter the musical world of Oliver!

The first show charts the journeys of thousands of hopefuls as they begin their quest for stardom via regional auditions. The girls are whittled down to just over a hundred, who are called to London to perform before the panel: those who stand out at audition have the chance to win a coveted place at Nancy School, the next stage in the competition.

Meanwhile, 50 young boys are selected to work with musical theatre experts before the final 12 who are lucky enough to make it to the live shows are chosen by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh. Each week, the wannabe Olivers are set a musical task and also perform as a group; they will not face a public vote, but must continue to impress Andrew and the panel to guarantee a place in the semi-final.

In time-honoured tradition, the Nancys will be vying to make their mark on Andrew and the panel and, from programme three, will also need to gain viewers’ support to stay in with a chance of winning the coveted role of Nancy in the West End.

ZIN IN!!!!

Nou dat kun je wel aan de BBC overlaten bleek gisteren maar weer. Wat een geweldig begin van de nieuwe serie !

kga vd week eens kijken, heb mijn dvd recorder met harde schijf het laten opneme, het zag er al leuk uit!

Het was ouderwets goed gisteravond. En wat een verschil met de AVRO serie. Leuk dat het nu om de zoektocht van The Lord (Andrew Lloyd Webber) en the Sir (Cameron Mackintosh) gaat. Sir Mackintosh vind ik een fantastische producent; echt een man met verstand van zaken.

Ook was het fijn om te merken dat we hier zeker niet te maken hebben met een vergelijkbare zoektocht als die naar Maria. Het wordt genieten van deze rauwe, platte en ietwat ordinaire vrouwen voor de Nancy rol. 

De zoektocht naar het jongetje voor de rol van Oliver lijkt me minder interessant, maar dat is persoonlijk. Ik heb het niet zo op die überprofessionele jongetjes van 9.

Oliver wordt de opvolger van Lord of the Rings in Drury Lane.

Ik vond die professionele jongetjes juist wel erg interessant om te zien. Ik wou dat we die kwaliteit hier ook hadden. Zowel in de Lion King als in Tarzan heb ik dergelijke zuivere stemmen nog niet mogen horen.

De premiere van ‘Oliver!’ in Theatre Royal Drury Lane is op 14 januari 2009. Previews vanaf 12 december 2008. De voorverkoop begint op 7 april.

net of dat echt uitmaakt voor de rol van fagin: toendertijd hadden wij ook arjan ederveen gecast, die zelf toen ookal aangaf dat hij niet echt kan zingen, maar met een beetje extra les komt altijd goed…..
